NAIA National Swim/Dive Meet summary
Tue, Mar 04 at 08:49 am

After 4 days of competition at the NAIA National Meet, the Illinois Tech Swimmers and Divers wrapped up another season. With only 4 women at the meet, the Lady Scarlet Hawks fought their way to a 9th place finish. All four women scored as individuals, led by Teresa Arribas with 2 top 8 finishes. The foursome of Sarah Stone, Samantha Staley, Nicolle Mallinger and Arribas put together 3 top 8 relays and 9 individual finalists for a total of 151 points. The men’s team was led by Branden Toro, who won the 1M diving and took 2nd in the 3M diving. Day 4 proved to be the strongest day for the men’s team, however as Joe Muchna, Jay Park and Carlos Ostolaza all placed top 8 – Muchna in two different events (1650 Free and 200 Fly). The men’s team fought its way to 236 points, good enough for an 8th place finish. Andrew Mehr, Kyle Pinsonneault, Brian Brady and Mark Callan all joined Muchna, Park and Ostolaza in producing 3 top 8 relay performances and 13 individual finalist performances.

The team will lose Sarah Stone, Samantha Staley and Carlos Ostolaza to graduation this year and they will be tough to replace. Stone and Staley have been a tremendous part of this program for the past four years. Their leadership, dedication to the team and outstanding talent will be sorely missed. Ostolaza was only with the team for a short time, but his impact on our national program this year cannot be overlooked. His work ethic and drive to improve helped set the tone for this team in workouts and at meets. Replacing all three will not be easy. Fortunately, the remaining 9 athletes will be back for next year. The team will add an incoming class to this group and look towards the national meet in 2009.

NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships Update
Tue, Mar 04 at 08:49 am

Day 1:

Branden Toro set a new school record for 3M diving today as he placed 2nd at the NAIA National Meet. This performance earns Branden his 3rd NAIA All American recognition of his career.

Swimming begins Thursday, along with 1M diving.

Day 2:

Sophomore Branden Toro broke the Illinois Tech school record for 1M diving today on his way to his first national title. In fact, his 488.45 point total is the 4th highest point total ever at the NAIA National Championship Meet in the 1M event. This national championship is the 6th in school history and the 5th in the past 7 years. For Coach Nelson, the diving coach, it is his first national champion. For Branden, the first place finish also represents his 4th All American recognition in only 4 tries over the past two years.

The women's 200 Medley Relay led the way for the swimmers today as the foursome of Sarah Stone, Teresa Arribas, Samantha Staley and Nicolle Mallinger fought their way to a 6th place finish. Staley and Mallinger (both in the 200 IM) were joined by Joe Muchna (500 Free), Andrew Mehr (50 Free) and Kyle Pinsonneault (50 Free) as the only swimmers to score individual points in Thursday's events.

The entire team competes again on Friday with prelims beginning at 10am and finals beginning at 6pm.

Day 3:

Men 8th and the Women are 9th after day 3 at the NAIA National Championships.

With only four women in the entire meet, the Lady Scarlet Hawks have made their presence felt. Teresa Arribas lead the way today with a 4th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke. She was joined by Sarah Stone, Samantha Staley and Nicolle Mallinger on a pair of top 8 relays. Stone, Staley and Mallinger all were able to contribute in the individual scoring as well.

For the men's team, it was another day of hard work and fast swims. The men swam to a pair of 6th place relay swims. Andrew Mehr, Mark Callan, Brian Brady and Kyle Pinsonneault made up the 200 Free Relay, while Mehr and Pinsonneault were joined by Joe Muchna and Jay Park in the 400 Medley Relay. Carlos Ostolaza, Jay Park and Andrew Mehr all contributed with individual points on the day.

Saturday is the final day of the meet. Both teams will look to keep their top 10 places as there are plenty of swims yet to go.
