Phil Kopinski joined the Scarlet Hawks women's cross country program as head coach in 2003. Since his arrival at Illinois Tech, the women's team has seen significant improvement including a team conference runner-up, and three third-place finishes in the CCAC. A 1994 graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Kopinski was a four-year letter winner at UIC where he helped lead the Flames to their best-ever finish at the Mid-Continent Conference Championships in 1991.
Before joining Illinois Tech, he spent nine years working as a Certified Athletic Trainer at the high school, college, and clinical settings as well as the head ATC in professional sports for six of them, two years in the Arena Football League (CHI), and four seasons in the United Hockey League (WSM,MUSK). Kopinski also serves as IIT's head Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC/L), overseeing the conditioning and rehabilitation of the university's intercollegiate athletes.
Phil and his wife Joan are both Chicagoland natives who still reside in the near west suburbs.
Matt is a graduate student in the school of Architecture in the second year of a three year masters program. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the School of Engineering at Tufts University as a 12- time varsity letter winner for the cross country and track and field teams. Matt was a captain of the cross country and track and field teams his senior year and still holds the school records at 5000 and 10000 meters. He was a two-time conference champion and competed at the NCAA DIII national meet 4 times. He brings over 8 years of distance running experience specializing in motivating his athletes as well as preaching rest and recovery. Matt is still competing at a high level and will be running is first marathon in October at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
Melissa is currently a 5th year undergraduate student at the Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in Aerospace Engineering. She was a varsity runner for IIT's women's team for the past four years. Melissa will graduate from IIT in May of 2008 and hopes to obtain a career in the Aeronautics field. Due to her experience, and passion for running, Melissa is a perfect fit to continue training with and assist with coaching the women's team. Melissa is currently ranked 5th All-Time among IIT's women distance runners and holds the 7th fastest 6 kilometer time. She is engaged and resides in Chicago. |
